Curator's Notes
Motifs
  • A modern carpet-weaving mainstay, this medallion centerpiece design was inspired by 15th-century Persian manuscript covers
  • A variation of motifs—simple, tribal, bold, and colorful—all hailing from the Anatolian region (modern-day Turkey)
  • Geometric designs feature angular edges and shapes—like diamonds, squares, lattices, and stylized animals
  • Wave-like cloud motifs—originating from China then adapted by weavers in Caucasia, India, and the Middle East
Region of Origin

Taspinar, in south central Anatolia, is known for high-quality wool rugs with Anatolian motifs that feature elongated hexagonal medallions with stepped edges and geometric floral details.

Material Details

Kork wool comes from the underbelly and neck of the sheep. Because both areas are slightly more protected from the elements, this wool has a higher lanolin content and a much softer handfeel—leaving behind a rich, silky luster.
