Curator's Notes

Motifs
  • A modern carpet-weaving mainstay, this medallion centerpiece design was inspired by 15th-century Persian manuscript covers
  • A hexagonal shape (also known as a “lozenge”) represents the female form and fertility
  • A variation of motifs—simple, tribal, bold, and colorful—all hailing from the Anatolian region (modern-day Turkey)
  • A geometric, step-like pattern often found in Anatolian designs
  • A classic, eight-pointed star stands for balance and harmony
  • A symmetrical overhead view of a floral rosette
Region of Origin

Konya is the former capital of the Selcuk empire—where the earliest traditions of weaving can be traced back to. Today, the area is still a key producer of rugs in Turkey.
