Motifs
  • An oversized central medallion centerpiece design appropriated from 15th century Persian manuscript covers, now a mainstay of carpet weaving
  • Simple, tribal, bold, and colorful motifs that originate from the Anatolian region that comprises the majority of modern-day Turkey
  • A result of gentle wear over time, a cross-hatched fade pattern produces a soft, distressed effect that mutes the color palette
  • Geometric stepped details characteristic of Anatolian motifs
Region of Origin

Avanos, in central Anatolia, is famous for its handicrafts, including rugs and pottery. Rugs from Avanos often feature geometricized floral motifs and scalloped-edge fields.

Material Details

Wool is the most popular fiber used in Turkish rugs because it is supple, durable, and plentiful in supply. A cotton foundation is also a popular choice, used to tie the wool knots onto. Cotton is rigid and strong, providing a firm foundation that stands the test of time.
