Konya is the former capital of the Selcuk empire from where the earliest weaving traditions can be traced. It remains an important producer of rugs in Turkey.
Hemp is one of the most durable natural fibers available. Turkish villagers produced pure hemp rugs until 1960, when cannabis production was banned. Due to the prohibition, hemp kilims are extremely rare. Nomadic tribes wove hemp with other natural fibers available, which in this case was wool and goat hair.
