Curator's Notes

The Collection

Named for modernist sculptors, our Modernist Jute Mats are effortless and charming. We were very taken with their kilim-like construction: a simple, rough handweave feels fresh and serene. Like a low profile rug, these minimalist pieces are lightweight and easy to move; their evocative ease works particularly well in a calm bedroom.

The Design

Hepworth has alternating neutral motifs, stripe-like trapezoids reminiscent of a desert plateau.

The Material

Jute is a natural fiber with a golden sheen, known for its tensile strength and versatility. In this piece, a handspun weft expresses jute’s natural irregularities and textures. An eco-conscious crop, jute has minimal water needs, and consumes large enough quantities of carbon dioxide that it’s C02-neutral. A cotton warp provides stability and strength.

The Maker

Our partner began in 1970 with one loom in a small room at home before flourishing into a bustling family business. The third-generation Bhadohi-based weaving house is known for their honesty, dedication, and innovation within the industry; as well as their facility with many types of weaving.

The Designer

Our in-house, all-star design team works across Los Angeles, Istanbul, and Mumbai. Starting with the weave itself, they determine the collection material, technique, and mood. When designs are finalized, they conduct an extensive sampling process, perfecting each style and hue before it goes to production.
