The Design

A beautiful, tightly-woven palm mat which exists nowhere else on the American market. Simple without being plain, this piece can be used on either side, depending on how daring you’re feeling. The front features a classic, artisanal flatweave, reminiscent of jute. The back is covered in tufted palm leaf which sticks out in all directions, and though it isn’t soft, its volume helps create a cushion when it’s hugging the floor.

The Material

Palm fiber is a staple raw material from Morocco which achieves its golden hue and tensile strength from the sun. The freshly-cut palm leaves turn from green to gold as they’re sun dried for several days, and are then braided into strips which can then be woven. Cotton, a vegetable fiber, is widely used in rugs because of its sturdiness and strength.

The Maker

Each palm mat was woven by female weavers living in rural areas of the Middle Atlas mountains. We work with a cooperative who delivers the raw palm fiber to women for them to work with on their own schedule. Woven and finished from the comfort of their homes, each mat is subsequently washed and dried in the surrounding fields.
