Curator's Notes
The Collection
Recycled Moroccan glass is often known as Beldi glass. Beldi refers to something that’s made by hand, locally, piece-by-piece, with traditional expertise. It connotes charm, and one-of-a-kind. A beldi thing may have minor imperfections, and it's precisely this character which makes it beautiful, and which tells its unique story. The tiny, occasional bubbles in each glass endear it all the more to the drinker.
The Design
A small, elegant wine glass which can also be used for olives, nuts, salt, or even to store jewelry.
The Material
Recycled glass is both fine and durable, and has the faintest green-blue tinge when you hold it to the light. The original method of working with glass, mouth-blowing, or glassblowing, is an ancient art which requires precision and speed, and involves using a tube to blow molten glass into a bubble in order to shape it, before letting it cool and harden.
The Supplier
When the small Casablanca-based factory which supplied much of Marrakech with their recycled glasses shut down, our partner jumped to action. He went to the field to learn the traditions of the craft first hand. In 2014, he launched his own recycled glass factory in Marrakech, working with designers and artisans to put their own spin on one of Morocco’s oldest heritage industries.
