Curator's Notes
Motifs
This piece is a tulu: a rare, traditional rug whose name originates with the Turkish word Tüylü, meaning hairy. Tulu rugs were woven for warmth, and are identified by their hand-knotted lines of long, shiny pile, which reveal strips of flatwoven weft weaving. Adding a textural stripe and dynamic movement, each row of long pile accent can be brushed down to cover the kilim sections in between.
An absolute classic, diamond-based designs create a beautiful and dynamic field of geometric shapes
This piece has a 3D detail, reminiscent of embroidery, in which accent threads have been left loose or added in, for texture and visual interest. Sometimes these threads are hand-knotted into decorative pompoms.
Region of Origin
Anatolia makes up the majority of modern-day Turkey. Rugs from this region are defined by their tribal and geometric designs—with plenty of symbols reflecting life from traditional households.
Material Details
Wool is the most widely used fiber in Turkish rug design. Not only is it plentiful in supply, it’s durable, long-lasting, and soft—so it’s super comfy to walk and relax on. In traditional tulus, the wool is blended with goat hair to create a warmer, stronger, shinier, and more voluminous pile. This unique blend of fibers is hand-knotted onto a wool foundation.
