Aubusson Rugs

These floral motifs hail from the town of Aubusson in central France, which has been famous for both its rugs and its tapestries since the 15th century. Originally designed for French nobility, their designs incorporate the depth perspective which became popular during the Italian Renaissance 200 years earlier. When charged by Louis XIV to stop mimicking the Turkish weavers and create a French style of rug weaving, artisans looked to this Italian influence, weaving three-dimensional floral designs.
