What We Believe

We believe that buying a high-quality rug should be smooth, transparent, and affordable.

Not all rugs are created equally. All of our rugs are woven with traditional techniques, natural fibers, and no superfluous markups.

Our vintage pieces are each one-of-a-kind, made between 30 and 100 years ago, and curated by us. Our new collections are fresh off the loom, woven today in limited editions, and designed in collaboration with artisan partners.

  • 01. THE RUG’S ORIGIN

It’s easy to forget how our material possessions are made. Many decades ago, artisans created our one-of-a-kind pieces entirely by hand. The wool was clipped and collected sheep-by-sheep to be handspun into yarn. From there, the rugs were skillfully handwoven using legacy designs. No machines, just special care and intention at each step.

  • 02. GOING TO THE SOURCE

Our teams in Turkey and India travel down winding roads to remote reaches of the country to handpick rugs every month. Because we source vintage pieces at a large scale and high level of personal attention, we know exactly what to look for, ensuring the rugs we carry are not just beautiful, but also of the best quality.

  • 03. TUMBLING

We place each rug into an old-world piece of equipment whose size and tumbling motion creates an ideal environment of gentle agitation and turbulence—the mechanical version of flipping a rug over your veranda and whacking it with a stick. As the chamber rotates, the rug’s foundation bends and moves, revealing the valleys within the tightly-woven weave to remove any dust.

  • 04. TRIMMING

Wool is a wonder fiber. It’s biodegradable, durable, and textural. It also can naturally fuzz over time, forming an outer layer that obscures the rug’s original charm. We use a rug-shearing tool to reveal a fresh and even layer that feels nearly new.

  • 05. CLEANING

We use the same gentle but effective handbrush cleaning techniques that have been used for centuries. Once clean, the rug’s patina and warmth shine through, so we can assess how to categorize it.

  • 06. OVERDYEING

Overdyeing revivifies rugs with beautiful designs but lackluster color palettes. We bathe them in low-impact dye solutions until they reach just the right shade, illuminating their original pattern. After they’re dyed, another round of the washing process follows.

  • 07. LINE DRYING

After our vintage pieces have been cleaned, the newly revived rugs are sun-dried to reveal their new vibrancy.

  • 01. WOOL SELECTION

Our partners source premium wool for its texture, color, and tensile strength. When called for, we custom-blend the wool to achieve the ideal balance of durability and softness.

  • 02. HANDSPINNING

Before any of the yarn is woven, it is spun by hand. We prefer handspun wool for its character. Its changing thickness absorbs dye in different saturations, which produces elegant highs and lows. Its nubby, subtly textured surface makes for a satisfying footfeel.

  • 03. SMALL BATCH DYEING

We use small batch dyes, so no two batches are the same color. This artisanal variation in tone adds subtle visual depth and texture.

  • 04. HANDWEAVING

Weaving by hand is both a skill and a tradition. In practicing it, weavers preserve a cultural legacy, employing symbolism and techniques that have been perfected over centuries.

  • 05. HAND-FINISHING

The process is not finished when the weaving is over. After our rugs are cut from the loom, we invest in time-consuming details, like hand-braiding the fringe, or hand-sewing the edges for extra security. Finally, we inspect our rugs one last time, hand-trimming away any stray threads.
