Femme Motifs
Internally, one of our favorite documents is called the Curators’ Notes. It’s an intricate spreadsheet which details the many motifs that appear in our vintage rugs. Because weaving is historically a female art, the symbols make up a female language. The word for flatweave rugs, Kilim, comes from the Arabic kalam, meaning speech or word. If you know where to look, you can read your rugs just as you would a book.
