Made by skilled artisans using time-honored techniques in Mirzapur, India

  • 100% semi-worsted New Zealand wool on cotton warp
    • You may find traces of dried hay, grass, or straw in your rug as grazing sheep often collect plant matter in their coats. Remove gently by hand or with tweezers.
    • Authentic wool fibers were used to weave this rug. Please note that when wool gets damp, it will smell like a wet sheep. This is the scent of lanolin, which acts as a waxy barrier against dirt and moisture.
  • Flatweave (3-4mm thick)
  • Hand-tied fringe. Fringe is not included in the overall dimensions above.
  • Color palette: pale sage gray, white, terracotta, taupe, tan
  • Due to its handmade nature a 5% variance in size, color and texture is to be expected.

  • PLEASE NOTE: Some custom pieces require design approval prior to production, while others will go straight to production. If this custom piece requires design approval, we’ll email you a mock-up within 1 week of placing your order. You'll then have 1 week to approve the final design. If we don't hear back within a week, your order will be canceled.

Care

  • We recommend that you regularly vacuum your rug to remove dirt and grime. Depending on how heavily your rug is used, just once or twice a month is adequate. Too much vacuuming can wear down the knots and fibers more quickly. If you have a suction attachment on your vacuum cleaner, use that instead of a rotary vacuum.
  • Vacuum on low power with a non-rotary (no spinning brush) vacuum or suction attachment only.
  • Every few months, you’ll also want to flip your rug over and vacuum the back to get the grit out of the foundation of the rug. It also helps to rotate your rug once a year to ensure even wear over time.
  • Every 3-5 years, we recommend getting your rug professionally hand-washed. Please do not take it to get steam or dry cleaned—this will almost certainly damage the rug! Hand-washing requires the use of a pH-balanced shampoo, worked into the rug by hand with a soft-bristled brush, before being rinsed thoroughly. This process should be repeated a few times.
  • Due to the hand-crafted nature of our rugs, you can expect to see light shedding, matting, and signs of fiber and thread breakage over time. For high traffic areas, these effects may occur more quickly and easily.
  • Spot cleaning instructions:
    • Lightly dampen a paper towel or cloth with clean water
    • Gently blot the affected area with your damp towel or cloth to dilute the stain
    • If the stain persists, try using an unscented, citrus-free, clear soap to avoid bleaching the textile.
    • Repeat this process until the stain is removed

The Collection

Desert Tones, a 3-piece limited edition capsule collection of flatweaves, was inspired by the desert at winter. Gemi is a re-issue of a design originally released in 2019 with an updated palette of sage gray, like the fragrance of cool desert evenings.

The Design

  • A central medallion provides a focal point from which the design blooms out and is balanced by smaller motifs
  • A linear, step-like pattern expresses the classic qualities of weaving from nomadic cultures
  • Artisanal, geometric designs feature angular edges and simple shapes—like diamonds, squares, lattices, and stylized animals
  • A bold set of ram’s horns represents strength and bravery

The Material

New Zealand wool is a premium wool beloved for its softness as well as its long fibers. Like all wools, it has a hydrophobic layer which repels dust and dirt, and lanolin which both provides its trademark luster and protects the fiber from breaking or shedding. It's woven onto a sturdy cotton warp for added durability.

The Maker

Our partner is the third weaving generation of his family, and heads a small weaving house known for their unparalleled skill. A perfectionist with color, he and his team take great pride in their work, which is evident in their final product.

About Custom Rugs

Custom rugs are final sale from the time of purchase. The estimated ship time of your custom item can be found below the "Add to Cart" button and varies based on size. Once the custom piece is is produced it is first shipped to our warehouse for a final inspection before we send it to you.

Because our custom rugs are woven by hand, there will be natural variations in color, and final sizes can vary by up to 2" in length and width.
