The Collection

Featuring traditional Gabbeh motifs with a more modern look, these rugs are so cozy they make you want to curl up and take a nap. Often with thick frame borders, like a painting, the original gabbehs were thick, soft rugs with abstracted worlds, populated with people and animals, wheatfields and sky, amidst an abyss of saturated, dappled monochrome. The rich color sense of these rugs, along with their idiosyncratic geometric details, bely a wild sophistication the abstract expressionists would kill for.

The Design

Deep, varied reds range from strawberry to bordeaux, punctuated with delicate chessboard motifs.

The Material

Wool is a stalwart rug fiber, and has been since the first weavers. Warm, soft, and strong, it has a hydrophobic layer which repels dust and dirt, as well as lanolin, which provides its trademark luster and protects the fiber from breaking or shedding. In this piece, it's hand-loomed onto a foundation of mildew-resistant polyester and sturdy cotton for added durability.

The Maker

We partnered with a small, family-run weaving house known for their flatweave expertise. They're Craftmark-certified, which means they meet stringent national standards for socially responsible handmade products. Many of their weavers have been with them for as long as 30 years. To visit their factory is to be steeped in its personal history, from the walls of photographs honoring their lineage, to the majestic, hundred-year-old timber looms they still use today.

The Designer

Our in-house, all-star design team works across Los Angeles, Istanbul, and Mumbai. Starting with the weave itself, they determine the collection material, technique, and mood. When designs are finalized, they conduct an extensive sampling process, perfecting each style and hue before it goes to production.

About Custom Rugs

It takes approximately 14-15 weeks to produce and ship a custom piece, where it then arrives at our warehouse for a final inspection.

Because our custom rugs are woven by hand, there will be natural variations in color, and final sizes can vary by up to 2" in length and width.

  • We recommend that you regularly vacuum your rug to remove dirt and grime. Depending on how heavily your rug is used, just once or twice a month is adequate. Too much vacuuming can wear down the knots and fibers more quickly. If you have a suction attachment on your vacuum cleaner, use that instead of a rotary vacuum.
  • Every few months, you’ll also want to flip your rug over and vacuum the back to get the grit out of the foundation of the rug. It also helps to rotate your rug once a year to ensure even wear over time.
  • Every 3-5 years, we recommend getting your rug professionally hand-washed. Please do not take it to get steam or dry cleaned—this will almost certainly damage the rug! Hand-washing requires the use of a pH-balanced shampoo, worked into the rug by hand with a soft-bristled brush, before being rinsed thoroughly. This process should be repeated a few times.
  • In case of spills, use a paper towel or cloth to blot the liquid. Add some clean water sparingly to the spot to dilute the stain (or wet a paper towel or cloth) and blot. If the stain is persistent, try using a mild detergent. Repeat this process until the stain is removed.
