Curator's Notes
- A variation of motifs—simple, tribal, bold, and colorful—all hailing from the Anatolian region (modern-day Turkey)
- Diamonds are interconnected and repeated throughout to create a dynamic field of both the diamonds and the resulting geometric shapes within the negative space the pattern's negative space
- Typically associated with the Yoruk nomads of Anatolia, these latch-hook ornaments are believed to protect against sources of danger—including ill will, wild animals, and natural disasters
- Just like a modern-day barber's pole, this pattern features alternating slanted stripes
Gaziantep is a major rug collection center located in southeastern Turkey. In particular, the area is known for hand-embroidered, flatweave cicims (a specific type of kilim).
Material DetailsWool is the most widely used fiber in Turkish rug design. Not only is it plentiful in supply, it’s durable, long-lasting, and incredibly plush—so it’s super comfy to walk and relax on. This wool pile is woven onto a foundation built from a mix of wool and the hardy hair fibers of mountain-dwelling goats—a strong material that's sole purpose is to hold up through years of rugged wear.
