Curator's Notes

The Collection

Our Outsider Doormats remind us of outsider art, and they’re made for the threshold between inside and outside. Made of jute, these handwoven low-profile doormats are perfect to use in every doorway: we like having one in each color throughout the house. Outsider art, also known as art brut, is defined as art made by self-taught artists, who operate outside of conventional art-world strictures. Often exuberant and poetic, it reminds us that other worlds are possible.

The Design

While jute has a desirable variation of hue and texture, in this piece, we solid-dye both warp and weft for a rich, deep solid color. Tolliver is a solid jet black.

The Material

Jute is a natural fiber with a golden sheen, known for its tensile strength and versatility. Low-shed, easy-to-clean, and biodegradable, its handspun weft expresses the jute’s natural irregularities and textures. An eco-conscious crop, jute has minimal water needs, and consumes large enough quantities of carbon dioxide that it’s C02-neutral.

The Maker

Our partner is a third-generation family-run weaving house in Bhadohi, India. They specialize in plush pile rugs, and their immense knowledge helped us improve construction for durability and less shedding. Their values are twofold: creating the highest-quality product and taking care of their team, supporting their weavers in whatever they need.

The Designer

Our in-house, all-star design team collaborates across three different countries. Based in Los Angeles, Istanbul, and Mumbai, they put a lot of thought into each and every collection they design. Starting with the weave itself, they determine material and technique, then create moodboards to capture the look and feel before starting to design. When designs are finalized, they work with the supplier on an extensive sampling process, perfecting each style and color before it goes to production.

Care Instructions

Clean regularly by giving it a good shake. Rotate to ensure even wear over time. Keep away from excessive moisture, which may cause mold. If your doormat gets completely wet, dry it thoroughly in the sun, or by bringing indoors, with a fan or heat source.
