Curator's Notes
Handwoven with silk thread from thousands of recycled saris, those staples of Indian culture which date back to 2800 BCE. For these rugs, silk saris are taken apart thread by thread before artisans sort them by color, and spin them into a yarn of hundreds of shades, giving it a depth and range of hues that can’t be achieved through dyeing.
The DesignA flaxen ground, made up of sophisticated shades of tan, covered in a shining golden yellow all-over lattice design.
Motifs- Diagonal lines weave and intersect, forming a grid-like pattern
- Abrash adds visual depth and texture in its variation in color and tone
Agra, once the capital of the Mughal Empire, began its prominent weaving tradition in the 16th century, when Emperor Akbar established weaving workshops for the decoration of his newly commissioned palace.
SupplierOur partner, based in Agra, is a second-generation rug-maker whose father started the business in the late 1970’s when the area experienced a weaving renaissance. Known for their high quality and the uniqueness of their product, they make it a point not to research the online presence of their customers or other rug-makers, to avoid tunnel vision, and to expand the possibilities of innovation.
