Our latest collaboration with artist K’era Morgan of k-apostrophe is a limited edition of 4 extra-large and luxurious cushions handwoven with New Zealand wool. Inspired by K’era’s time in Mexico, where she was blown away by the history, art, and culture: museum artifacts from the Aztec periods, Oaxacan weaving traditions, looms, and their exquisite craftsmanship, artistry and skill.
The DesignThe Mamba lumbar cushion features a black motif on a cream ground with a yellow-and-cream stripe border on the top and bottom. Its design is a winding, geometric snake, with—depending on how you look at it—two heads. One way this takes shape in Mexico is as Quetzalcoatl, the shapeshifting Aztec feathered snake deity. “I have a fascination with serpent symbology across the globe,” K’era explains, “and in Diego Rivera’s house (this snake god) is painted along the ceiling.”
The MaterialNew Zealand wool is a premium wool beloved for its softness and long fibers. Like all wools, it has a hydrophobic layer which repels dust and dirt, as well as lanolin, which provides its trademark luster and protects the fiber from breaking or shedding. In these cushions, it’s handwoven onto a 100% cotton foundation for durability.
The MakerOur partner is a small, family-run operation devoted to maintaining the integrity of the yarn they use. Wherever possible they prioritize the use of organic materials, and are committed to a high level of quality and craftsmanship.
The DesignerK’era Morgan is a Los Angeles-based mixed media painter who graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a BFA in textile design. Her work is a reflection of her mood, with color and brushstrokes and mark-making heavily representing the essence of a feeling, emotion or thought in the exact moment. Her brand, k-apostrophe, as well as her collage paintings, can be found in independent boutiques, private residences and art collections around the world.
