Curator's Notes

Motifs
  • Diagonal lines weave and intersect, forming a grid-like pattern
  • A hexagonal shape (also known as a “lozenge”) represents the female form and fertility
  • Oversized birds, like a peacock or phoenix, represent regal beauty and a tad of opulence
Region of Origin

Mut is a seaside town in southern Turkey known for its hardy and tribal goat hair based flatweave kilims embroidered in intricate geometric patterns.

Material Details

Goat hair fibers are longer and firmer than those of sheep’s wool. In this kilim, goat hair is woven into a durable flatweave rug, then intricate designs are carefully hand-embroidered using a mix of wool and cotton yarn.

How to Style This Rug

Medium rugs between 5’ x 8’ and 6’ x 9’ are loved for their versatility.
