Curator's Notes

Motifs
  • A variation of motifs—simple, tribal, bold, and colorful—all hailing from the Anatolian region (modern-day Turkey)
  • Deeply meaningful symbols to the women weavers of this culture, these interconnected medallions represent pregnancy and motherhood
  • A geometric, step-like pattern which expresses the primitive, artisanal qualities of weaving from nomadic cultures
  • Artisanal and tribal, geometric designs feature angular edges and simple shapes—like diamonds, squares, lattices, and stylized animals
Region of Origin

Gaziantep is a major rug collection center located in southeastern Turkey. In particular, the area is known for hand-embroidered, flatweave cicims (a specific type of kilim).

Material Details

Wool is the most widely used fiber in Turkish rug design. Not only is it plentiful in supply, it’s durable, long-lasting, and soft—so it’s super comfy to walk and relax on. This wool pile is woven onto a foundation built from the hardy hair fibers of mountain-dwelling goats—a strong material that's sole purpose is to hold up through years of rugged wear.
