Subtle, sophisticated, and soft: what more could you want in a rug? Inspired by our bestselling Halo Rug, the Matta rugs are woven with luxurious hand-carded wool. Hand-carding requires skill and attention, and we use a kilim-style weave to show off the yarn’s natural texture.
The DesignIn this piece, a blend of New Zealand wool and European wool creates a natural abrash effect from cream to beige to brown. Its touch of color comes in from the cotton warp, shining through the wool weft. Vava’s bright grassy green grid reminds us of fuzzy graph paper.
The MaterialThis rug has a hand-knotted pile of New Zealand wool, a premium wool beloved for its softness and long fibers, which we mix with European wool for strength. Artisans separate the curly wool into like tones, which adds subtle movement to each area of color. Because undyed wool is relatively unprocessed, less of its lanolin is stripped out, making it both stronger and softer and ultimately, even more luxurious. In this collection, it’s handwoven onto a cotton foundation for further durability.
The MakerOur partner is a small, family-run operation based in Bhadohi, with an in-house spinning mill, dying plant, weaving unit, and washing unit. They’re invested in researching new weaving technologies, especially when it comes to improving environmentally-sound practices.
The DesignerOur in-house, all-star design team collaborates across three different countries. Based in Los Angeles, Istanbul, and Mumbai, they put a lot of thought into each and every collection they design. Starting with the weave itself, they determine material and technique, then create moodboards to capture the look and feel before starting to design. When designs are finalized, they conduct an extensive sampling process, perfecting each style and color before it goes to production.
- Clean regularly with a non-rotary, low powered vacuum without a beater brush.
- Rotate your rug on occasion to ensure even wear over time.
- Keep away from excessive moisture.
- Do not dry clean or steam clean.
- Professional cleaning recommended as needed.
- In case of spills, use a paper towel or cloth to blot the liquid. Add some clean water sparingly to the spot to dilute the stain (or wet a paper towel or cloth) and blot. If the stain is persistent, try using a mild detergent. Repeat this process until the stain is removed.
