Chindi or chindhi is a Hindi term that refers to torn cloth or rags, and these leftover fabric scraps are woven into new textiles, from rugs, to blankets, to cushions. Reflective of the ever-shifting post-modern, post-consumer landscape, our 'everything cushions' are woven with colorful miscellaneous fibers. Artisans collect garments and cloth, sort them by color, and turn them into yarn to weave with. They make these pieces by hand, which adds to their lifespan.
Made to mix and match, our Chindi Cloud cushion has a meandering free-form pattern of navy and cornflower.
The MaterialIndia imports used jeans and leftover denim fabric from around the world, which yarn-makers sort by color. After removing zippers and buttons, garments are cut into small pieces and then spun into yarn form that can be woven into something new, preventing pounds of fabric and garments from going into a landfill. These cushions are primarily upcycled denim, but because of the nature of the sorting process, they also have traces of upcycled mixed knits. We mix these fibers with jute for sturdiness and texture.
The MakerOur partner is a third-generation family-run weaving house in Panipat. Loyal to the principles of fine craftsmanship, they're also making efforts to minimize pollution in their industry. In all of what they make, they prioritize tradition, quality and an eye for detail.
The DesignerOur in-house, all-star design team collaborates across three different countries. Based in Los Angeles, Istanbul, and Mumbai, they put a lot of thought into each and every collection they design. Starting with the weave itself, they determine material and technique, then create moodboards to capture the look and feel before starting to design. When designs are finalized, they work with the supplier on an extensive sampling process, perfecting each style and color before it goes to production.
