Curator's Notes
- A variation of motifs—simple, tribal, bold, and colorful—all hailing from the Anatolian region (modern-day Turkey)
- A modern carpet-weaving mainstay, the centerpiece design featuring an oversized medallion was inspired by 15th-century Persian manuscript covers
- Twin pendants flank a central medallion
- A sickle-leaf motif with highly detailed and serrated leaves displays the meticulous craftsmanship and skill of the weaver
- A larger border is flanked by two smaller borders
- A simple, but classic design—zig-zag patterns represent water as a vital element in life
Balikesir is a western Anatolian town known for nomadic Yoruk rugs. These tend to feature stepped hexagonal patterns and a maze-like pattern of latch-hook motifs.
Material DetailsWool is the most widely used fiber in Turkish rug design. Not only is it plentiful in supply, it’s durable, long-lasting, and incredibly plush—so it’s super comfy to walk and relax on.
