Curator's Notes

Motifs
  • A series of repeating medallions fill out the field in balanced, ornamental details
  • A series of geometrically stylized waves represents water—a vital element of life
  • A seventies-inspired motif references the psychedelic, opulent, and undulating shapes which defined the decade's design
  • The weavers' expertise is on full display with a curvilinear design, as circlular motifs are trickier to execute than angular ones
Region of Origin

Usak, located just west of central Anatolia, is known for carpets marking the rise of what scholars call the Turkish carpet design revolution. This refers to the transition from angular, geometric designs to the more organic, curvilinear designs found in Persian carpets—resembling Ottoman art and architecture.
